Marty Bicknell and Lemuel Sheppard are the 2017 recipients of Pittsburg State’s Meritorious Achievement Award, the university’s highest honor.

Bicknell, a 1991 graduate, is the founder and chief executive officer of Mariner Wealth Advisors in Leawood, Kansas.

Sheppard, a 1982 and 1983 graduate, is an award-winning musician.

Bicknell and Sheppard were honored by the university with a public reception on campus in April.

“This year’s honorees are a vivid example of the many ways that the more than 65,000 Pittsburg State University alumni have an impact on the world,” said Jon Bartlow, director of alumni and constituent relations. “One is a pioneer in the field of wealth management. The other is pioneer in music and culture. Each has left an imprint that will be long-remembered.”

Bicknell has two children, Savannah and Zach, and one granddaughter, Parker.

Sheppard has three children: Isaac; Alexander, who is also a PSU graduate and musician; and Ellen. He met his wife, Gail, while in graduate school at PSU.

A public reception in honor of the 2017 Meritorious Achievement Award recipients was held on Friday, April 7, in the Heritage Room of the Overman Student Center.
